Clarksdale Wants To Raid CPU Piggy Bank

CLARKSDALE, MS (Ben Caxton) — One day after Clarksdale’s mayor and commissioners stopped short of replacing all five Clarksdale Public Utilities commissioners, the CPU board met and heard from Ward 1 Commissioner Bo Plunk. Plunk did not give a specific reason why the city considered replacing the CPU board but did say the city was hoping to receive surplus funds from the utility in lieu of property taxes. That issue was raised by Mayor Espy in August when he asked CPU to transfer $800,000 to the city for economic development purposes. Plunk asked CPU General Manager Mark Johnson to work with the city clerk and auditors, and within 45 days recommend an amount that CPU could transfer to the city.
