Clarksdale Is Getting A Cleanup On Saturday

Chicot Memorial

CLARKSDALE, MS (Ben Caxton) — During yesterday’s meeting of the Clarksdale city board Mayor Chuck Espy urged the community to join a citywide cleanup set for Saturday, December 2nd. He said about 70 citizens are already committed and hopes to have 150 participants, beginning at 7:30 Saturday morning at the Civic Auditorium with cleanups taking place about every three months. The mayor and commissioners also approved actions recommended by the planning commission and approved the low bid for city property insurance. City clerk Cathy Clark said bids for liability and workman’s comp coverage would be presented next month, and by putting the policies out for competitive bids the city hopes to save $500,000 this year on insurance premiums. Only two months into the fiscal year the city’s sales tax revenues are over $28,000 below budget and over $21,000 down from last year. The board also acknowledged receipt of a 3-year grant for approximately $176,000, representing 75% of the cost of adding two community service officers to the city’s police force.
