City Of Leland Refutes Flood Damage Claims

LELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — A group of Leland residents are threatening to sue the city, saying the town failed to maintain its drains. Attorney Ashley Harris has written to Mayor Kenny Thomas, blaming the city for homes that flooded after heavy rains last month. Thomas denied the claims at last week’s board of aldermen meeting, saying city crews cleared streets of drain-clogging leaves and debris on February 21st. He says he was up before dawn the next day to make sure pumps were operating and the city went “above and beyond”. Leland’s city attorney called the possible lawsuit “ridiculous” and says the city’s insurer is dealing with Harris and the 15 residents.
