Chemical Spill Closes U.S. 61 in Vicksburg

VICKSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — A chemical spill closed a major Vicksburg highway for several hours Wednesday afternoon. U.S. 61 North was cordoned off after a semi-tractor trailer truck collided with a farm tractor around 11:00 AM between Mississippi 465 and the Yazoo River bridge. The semi was carrying a load of what emergency officials said was a petroleum-based chemical more flammable than gasoline which spilled onto the roadway after the tank was slashed open in the collision. Both northbound and southbound lanes were closed, and a nearby elementary school in the evacuation zone were kept indoors until the cleanup was completed around 3:00 PM. No one was injured in the accident.
