Chawla Hotels Get Their $6M Tax Break

CLEVELAND, MS (Ben Caxton) — Telling reporters “you either qualify, or you don’t” Mississippi Development Authority spokesman Jeff Rent announced that Cleveland’s new Trump-branded hotel will receive state tax breaks totaling just over $6M. The state offers developers a rebate of up to 30 percent of their investment from the state’s tourism taxes. About 25 projects in the past several years have been approved for tax rebates under the Mississippi Tourism Incentive Program, including a $4.1 million exemption this week for a Jackson entertainment complex. The Scion at West End Hotel in Cleveland is being built by Chawla Pointe LLC, a Mississippi-based, family-run hotel company headed by Dinesh Chawla.
