Changes Coming To Local Prisons

GREENWOOD, MS (Ben Caxton) — The Mississippi Department of Corrections plans to repurpose and reopen a Greenwood prison is having repercussions at jail facilities across the Delta. The 1000 bed Delta Correctional Facility located next to the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department last housed prisoners in 2012. But now MDOC has announced that it plans to reopen the facility to serve as a centralized location to house male probationers and parolees who violate the terms of their supervision. As a result, the Washington County Community Work Center and the Simpson County Technical Violations Center will close, and the Leflore County Technical Violations Center and Greenwood Restitution Center will be transferred to Delta Correctional. MDOC says the new facility will need 65 employees. It expects most of them will come from the regional facilities that are being closed or their operations transferred.
