Burglar Breaks Into Unmarked Police Vehicle, Ends Up Shot

(Ascension Parish, LA) — A burglar is shot after trying to break into an unmarked police unit in Ascension Parish, Louisiana early Sunday morning. It happened around 4:30 when a neighbor alerted an off-duty Louisiana State Police detective that his unmarked police unit was being burglarized. After arming himself, the detective went outside to find that the burglar had already broken into the vehicle and taken several valuable items. After the detective chased the suspect and briefly struggled with him, the suspect said he had a gun and was ready to use it. He then reached for a gun in his pocket and the detective responded by firing a round and shooting the burglar in the abdomen. Deputies arrived on the scene, recovered the stolen items and the handgun probably used by the burglar. The suspect was transported to the area hospital.
