JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — Governor Phil Bryant has appointed retired Col. Gregory Michel as the new director of the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, effective immediately. He takes over from J.W. Ledbetter, the Governor’s senior criminal justice policy advisor, who has overseen MEMA operations since last month when former director Lee Smithson resigned. A Hattiesburg native, Michel was Commander of Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Hattiesburg until last fall. Bryant said that he served the people of Mississippi and our nation for almost three decades as a member of the National Guard.
