Breaking: Phone Scam Occurring Now

(Greenville, MS) — Washington County Sheriff Gaston is warning the public of a county wide telephone scam involving an individual using the name “Lt. Mark Richardson” claiming to be with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department seeking to collect a fine in lieu of arrest for failing to report for jury duty.

The Sheriff’s Department does not call anyone to arrange payments of fines over the phone for failure to appear for jury duty or any other infraction.

In order to appear more credible the scammers may even provide information like a badge number, and the name of an actual judge and courthouse address. Victim’s have been told they can avoid arrest by paying a fine using a reloadable credit card, and were urged to call a number and provide their own credit card number to initiate the process. Sheriff Gaston urges the public not to give personal or financial information to unknown callers, even if they sound legitimate.

The number the male subject is calling from is 662-214-2695 which shows it coming from Baldwyn, MS. The Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Marshall’s service are aggressively working together to find the suspects involved.
