Atheist Group Objects to New Mississippi Plates

JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — A national group that includes atheists and agnostics is objecting to Mississippi’s new license plates that say “In God We Trust.” The American Humanist Association has sent a letter to state’s revenue commissioner and attorney general demanding that Mississippi either offer a new standard license plate design without a religious phrase or allow people to get another car tag design without paying an extra fee. The association threatened to sue Mississippi if the change is not made. A new standard license plate was introduced this year showing the state seal which includes “In God We Trust.” Mississippi offers a number of specialty license plate designs for an extra $30 per year.

  1. These people aren’t atheists.
    They’re anti-theists.
    Big difference between the two.

If they sue the state and receive a $ settlement I bet they accept the money with In God We Trust.

  3. If they win a settlement I bet they accept money with IN GOD WE TRUST on it

  4. Cameron Compton – If they are “anti-theists” as you suggest, I suppose Mississippi could offer an alternative motto: “In Satan We Trust”. Think that would satisfy the malcontents?
