Arkansas Town Subject Of Federal Election Lawsuit

HELENA-WEST HELENA, AR (Ben Caxton) — A federal lawsuit filed Thursday alleges that the city of Helena-West Helena’s actions repealing a vote of the people regarding ward changes and the reduction of council members trampled on the rights of more than 10,000 residents of the city. The suit asks that the ordinance, overwhelmingly approved by voters last November, be reinstated and that the ward-changing map be implemented immediately in time for next year’s city elections. The lawsuit also contends that the city council and Mayor Jay Hollowell did not follow Arkansas state law in attempting to repeal the ordinance; Helena-West Helena’s mayor and members of the city council are named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
