Another Popular Vicksburg Park Facing Issues

VICKSBURG, MS (Ben Caxton) — Another popular Vicksburg park is facing problems caused by sliding ground. After heavy rains the last few days a section of road at the Vicksburg National Military Park has been closed to traffic. Park maintenance crews discovered that a portion of North Union Avenue between Grant Avenue and the USS Cairo Museum had washed out on Thursday. The road is expected to reopen shortly, with detours. Meanwhile, the city’s Riverfront Park is still closed. Part of the park began sliding into the Mississippi River last year destroying safety fences and threatening the park’s playground, and walking trail. Repairs were expected to take about 90 days until soil contamination was discovered at the site and all work was stopped. City officials now say the park should reopen this summer.
