Another Mississippi Confederate Monument Under Fire

LAFAYETTE COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — Another Confederate monument at a Mississippi courthouse is under fire. A number of people expressed their opinions to Lafayette (County supervisors during a public meeting this week. Effie Burt of Oxford said her family was run out of the county decades ago because one of her relatives refused to take orders from a white man, and Confederate monuments should be put in a museum. Another Oxford resident, Danny Toma, said the monument honors local men who died defending their homes, many of whom did not own slaves. The board did not vote on whether to remove the Confederate soldier statue that has stood on the square in Oxford since 1907.
