Animal Rabies case confirmed

A feral black and white kitten is Mississippi’s first confirmed case of an animal with rabies since 1961. Rabies is commonly found in bats, as well as feral and wild animals in neighboring states. The Mississippi State Department of Health is working to identify anyone who may have been exposed to the rabid cat in downtown Starkville or near the Mississippi State University campus during the last ten days and urging them to contact their primary care physician although there is no ongoing public health risk.
