Alford plea in Sunflower County murder case

A man charged in the death of his former girlfriend in 2008 has entered an Alford plea, which allows for the court to receive a guilty plea without the defendant admitting to the crime. In exchange, Scottie Abney will avoid a life sentence for the death of 42-year-old Angelia Yates of Inverness in October 2008. He was sentenced to 20 years for manslaughter and for conspiracy to murder a witness in the case. Two other men were also implicated in the attack on Kevin Applewhite in February 2011 in the town of Sunflower.
