A proposed budget for the city of Jackson includes an eight percent increase in property taxes and a freeze on hiring

The mayor’s plan means home owners would pay 51- dollars a year more in property taxes on homes valued at 100- thousand. It’s believed that without the increase the city would be 600- thousand short in revenue. The mayor is also asking for increased fines for traffic violations, higher impound fees with furloughs ensuring that no new vehicles will be purchased for the next two years. The plan would also call for higher fees for fire inspection permits and fireworks displays. Room rentals at the Smith Robertson Museum would also go from 93- dollars to 750.
