79-Year-Old Drowns in Issaquena County

ISSAQUENA COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — A 79-year-old Illinois man is now presumed dead after falling off a bridge in Issaquena County. Witnesses told Delta Daily News that the man, his brother-in-law, and a young boy were fishing off of the Steel Bayou Bridge near Highways 1 and 14 around 1:00 PM Monday afternoon when the elderly man fell into the waters below. They say the man tried but was unable to reach help. They added that they have been coming to fish the area for over 20 years. Both the Issaquena sheriff’s office and Mississippi Wildlife Game and Fish wardens responded to the call for help. Issaquena County Sheriff Richard Jones said divers from Washington County were on the scene seeking to locate the body. This is a developing story. Delta Daily News will have more details as they become available.
