JACKSON, MS (Ben Caxton) — 79 people died in fires in Mississippi last year. In 38 cases there was no smoke alarm and in a dozen others, the smoke alarms didn’t work. Electrical fires topped the list, resulting in 21 deaths. Harrison County reported six fire deaths, the most of any county. 56 people died in fires in 2017 and State Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Ricky Davis says he’s unsure why fire deaths increased last year, but as recently as 2006 his office was investigating more than 100 fire deaths a year.
