$71 a Night for Vermont Prisoner Stay in Mississippi

TALLAHATCHIE COUNTY, MS (Ben Caxton) — It’s a done deal. 228 Vermont inmates currently housed in Pennsylvania will move to a privately-run prison near Clarksdale next month. The Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler, run by CoreCivic, has 350 beds available and Vermont will pay $71 per day per inmate in the first year of the contract and $73 in the second year. That’s comparable to the cost in Pennsylvania and less than half the rate of overcrowded Vermont facilities. The inmates have been at Pennsylvania’s Camp Hill since June 2017 and have complained about treatment, medical care, and several inmate deaths.
