20 Greenwood Students Hospitalized in Bus Crash

MCCARLEY, MS (Ben Caxton) — More than 20 Greenwood high school students sent to area hospitals when their school bus overturned along U.S. Highway 82 in Carroll County Monday. Most suffered just abrasions and bruises according to the highway patrol, but one student was seriously injured and flown to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo for treatment. A spokesman for the school district told media that the bus was carrying 40 students and three football coaches back to Greenwood from a football camp in Starkville. Head football coach Clinton Gatewood was driving at the time of the accident. The accident report says Gatewood lost control of the bus after it ran off the right edge of the pavement. He overcorrected and crossed over the left edge of the road with the bus then flipping onto its side as Gatewood tried to swerve back to the right.
